Rachel studied Music at Dartington College of Arts between 1989 and 1991 and at University of Kent (Christ Church, Canterbury) 1991 – 1994.
After obtaining her degree in Music and Film studies she moved to London and established a successful career as an animation and post production producer working on commercials and music videos for artists such as Radiohead, Massive Attack and Gorrilaz. She moved back to Devon in 2003 with the arrival of her first child and has concentrated on sharing her musical expertise through private instrumental teaching, both at home and within Primary School settings, and establishing her own music workshop company ‘Hullaballoo’ which runs classes
for groups of children and their parents.
Rachel has a particular interest and involvement with music for Early Years. In 2012 she secured funding through Youth Music for Hullabaloo to develop Music Provision for early years in Totnes and the rural surrounding communities. Rachel was Music Leader and Project Manager for the Hullabaloo project fronted by Sure Start’s Daisy Children's Centre.
Belief in the empowering ability of music to communicate, educate, and inspire and an enjoyment of the dynamics of working with both Mums and children through the medium of music to aid communication, confidence, social and physical development, expression, bonding and attachment is what underpins all of her work.
Rachel is also a key trainer for Early Years Music provision in the South West, running courses and workshops for teachers and learning communities to generate support and understanding for the importance of music within Early Years education.
“With all the work that I do visiting schools and pre-schools, I strive to leave an imprint on the teaching staff that by teaching creatively we can stimulate young minds to think creatively, and this in turn leads to young minds developing broadly and confidently, setting them up with
life skills to take them into secure future lives.”
Original compositions written in direct response to children’s needs are a strong feature to Rachel’s musical style. Some of these original compositions used across the classes are now available on a cd album that was recorded and produced this year.
